Trustee: Be a Leading Force in Determining Rights

Trustee statement (1)

Delta Lambda Phi Trustee and Chairman of the Board of the Directors, Br. Phil Hernandez, issued the following statement to the Brotherhood on Sunday, January 29, 2017:

Brothers:

Within the past two weeks, we witnessed millions of women who stood in solidarity – within our country, and throughout the world – “to pursue a vision that recognizes that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our country.”

Regrettably, the President issued an executive order that restricts individuals from seven countries from entering the United States. The order has already led to a negative impact to further a climate of diversity and inclusion within our nation and generated uncertainty for many of our members. It is contrary to the values of our Brotherhood and the fraternity we aspire to be.

I am the son of immigrants. I share this experience with many of my Brothers. My parent’s realization of the American Dream provided them with the opportunity to pursue success regardless of their circumstance. Their sacrifice allowed me to follow my aspirations without questioning whether or not my own accomplishments would be possible.

Individuals and organizations across our country are confronted with the choice of how to make a difference in the face of national and international concern.

For our part, there is no ambiguity about our collective responsibility. We are enabled by our purposes, and empowered by our vision, to lead in determining the rights and privileges of individuals in society.

Our purpose is unwavering: “…sometimes we, as members of Delta Lambda Phi, must stand up for those around us who can’t speak for themselves. We may demonstrate this by ensuring everyone is treated equally and that no one is ever discriminated against for any reason… This is truly one of the best ways to make our presence known and spread the name of Delta Lambda Phi.”

Let us insist that those who may feel marginalized are supported. Let us organize an effort to engage our elected officials and express our belief that every individual deserves justice. Let us be the unifying force that brings voices together towards a shared goal of inclusion everywhere.

Uncertainty may remain for some time. We will not be afraid. Let us unite behind our value of justice and work to achieve a society based upon equity and self-determination for ourselves, our partners within our campuses, and beyond.

Let us make our presence known. Let us be that difference.
