Convention 2014 Recap
July 31, 2014
Brothers from all over the world took over Tampa to rediscover Delta Lambda Phi and develop new bonds of Brotherhood for our 25th Annual Convention!
As you may have seen mentioned on social media, most of the 120 of those in attendance suffered from some sort of PCDD (Post-Convention Depressive Disorder) in the days following. Some of us are still missing the snaps and shade. But I don’t think anyone can deny how refreshing and re-charging this event was!
Here’s a look back at the highlights from Convention 2014:
Welcome from Tampa Mayor
To kick off Convention with a bang this year, we invited Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn to speak during our opening session. Mayor Buckhorn was very welcoming to our Brothers, and thoroughly enjoyed poking fun at Joel (for messing up his name) and Br. Lee Tran (for being fabulous).
Back-to-Basics: Reaffirm & Rediscover
Spread out over 3 days at Convention, this gave all Brothers the chance to thoroughly discuss our values, mission, and vision. Here, everyone’s voice mattered. The oldest Brother in attendance had been in DLP for nearly 25 years. The youngest, just 2 weeks. Our Trustee, Jeff Thompson, led the discussion and got everyone involved in several activities to help illustrate topics of importance. These discussions later helped us update and revise our values for approval during the Delegate Business Meeting.
Workshop topics this year ranged from membership recruitment & retention (led by our founder, Br. Vernon L. Strickland) and ritual demonstrations to reducing risky situations and exploring transgender identities. Our workshop time was a bit more limited this year due to the large amount of time devoted to the Back-to-Basics discussions, but were well-attended and well-presented! A big thank you to all of our presenters!
Our Brotherhood is full of talent! That’s why this year, we decided to do something different. This talent/variety show was a chance for our Brothers to showcase their talents in a safe environment. From drag and singing to dancing and comedy, this was a fun event for all! A big thanks to all performers and those who gave “Dollars for Delphi” too!
We were pleased to welcome Kevin Torres, a backpack journalist and reporter from K*USA-TV in Denver to share his story with the Brotherhood and discuss the importance of telling our story to our own and to our future members. Following awards presentations (look for a separate email detailing the winners), our Founder, Vernon L. Strickland, III, provided us with some unforgettable remarks: “No matter how far you drift, or how long you have been gone…You can always come HOME.” Trustee Jeff Thompson’s remarks were just as heartfelt and poignant, reminding us all of why were are Brothers. Our annual auction followed, with bids on banners, a Convention 2014 t-shirt signed by all attendees, and even a custom tie worn by Vern. After a very emotional Trustee’s Memorial, our spirits were uplifted and rejuvenated for the singing of Delta Phi with all chapter verses.
Of course these made a return! A bunch of Brothers enjoyed playing poker, Cards Against Humanity, and many other favorites!
The DLP Store had a bunch of new items that debuted at Convention! Duffle bags, centaur pint glasses, water bottles, a DLPAA tee, and a Trevor Project tee are all still available online. Check it out!
Thank you so much to everyone who made Convention 2014 memorable!
